June 25, 2003 - Graduation Dinner

October 2002 - Lunch time focus group (below)

AN IMPORTANT ONGOING PROJECT is: Team building, leadership training sessions & retreats - bi-weekly 2 hour team training sessions & frequent planning meetings continue the Power of One tradition. Also, ee usually hold 2 or 3 overnight retreats each school year. See our PhotoGallery for pics and details.

Some of our past action projects, dating back to late 1999 & early 2000, included:

1. Development of the Power of One project, vision, charter & objectives; and selection & training of students during day sessions and 3 off-site retreats (Holiday Valley + Peek & Peak + BOCES Ropes Course). In school meetings & trainings occur every 2 weeks through-out the year.

2. Assessment (through focus groups) of student needs & ideas around the closing of 2 old high schools (Lasalle & the old Niagara Falls HS) & the merger and opening of the new Niagara Falls High School - Spring 2000.

3. Collection of responses from the High School Quality Council and sharing of information with students, staff and parents - based on the needs expressed by students (see # 2 above).

4. Planning & holding a Power of One Picnic during June 2000 to promote & build awareness of the Power of One project and objective of helping in the safe merger into the new Niagara Falls High School.

5. Design and Delivery of student-led, student-attended focus groups during 3 days in November 2000. Focus groups gathered ideas on school safety, reducing risk behaviors and improving the learning environment. Focus group transcripts were reviewed and summarized by students during a 2 day retreat at Peak & Peek - November 2000. A report was later completed and shared with staff.

6. Design and delivery of Power of One presentation to state coordinators of Extended School Day & School Violence Prevention programs at the Desmond Hotel & Conference Center in Albany, NY in March 2001. (evaluation from that presentation is available here)

7. Design, production and broadcast of video PSA seeking new members - 2001.

8. Assessment of NEED FOR ACTION PROJECT, during spring 2001, to assist incoming 9th graders have social + academic success when entering NFHS. This PROJECT GET READY has become an important part of the SUMMER ACADEMY. See below for some early meeting notes on Project Get Ready.

9. Initial design and many many more steps in 2003 launching of the STUDENT CENTER. Original idea surfaced during November 2000 Focus Groups.

More being summarized for listing here.

A PIECE OF OUR HISTORY...

PROJECT GET READY - first phase - has been delivered to freshmen as of October 21, 2001. We are evaluating the outcomes and making adjustments for a stronger & more effective Round II - coming during the fall of 2002.

-:----Below is some of the history of the project----:-

Project Get Ready - this is a team work page - more details on PROJECT GET READY can be found at the actionprojects link

More details were developed for PROJECT GET READY during our Fall 2001 Leadership Retreat.

Project Get Ready - Late last spring the Power of One team raised this question: What would help incoming freshmen have greater success in fitting in at the High School? Team discussions and a few summer meetings soon birthed this new project. PROJECT GET READY is a year long varied course of activites that will help serve the community of freshmen with skills and fresh ideas. The primary goal is: to increase healthy social behaviors in 9th grade students. There are many secondary goals and objectives, including giving Power of One leaders the hands-on experience of developing, delivering and evaluating an action-based training program to all 600+ freshmen. Project Get Ready delivered its first activity during the September 6th freshman orientation.

PROJECT GET READY FOCUS GROUPS WITH 9TH GRADERS WERE HELD ON OCTOBER 24TH, 2001 During periods 3 & 5. See Pics in our PhotoGallery.
